Project Manager
Sherwood Design Engineers is currently seeking an experienced mid-level Civil Engineering Project Manager with strong site engineering skills and the ability to thrive in a fast pace multi-disciplinary environment. The preferred candidate will have complementary background to Civil Engineering in Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, or Landscape Architecture. The individual in this role will maintain our Innovation Program, reporting to the Director of Innovation within a progressive and dynamic civil engineering firm headquartered in San Francisco.
A Project Manager must manage, coordinate, and direct the activities of one or more specialized area of operations. This position requires the effective Project Management of budgets, staff, and shared resources related to the production of complex, large site design and engineering projects. In addition, this role requires effective coordination of shared resources that internally comprise the Innovation Lab.
The successful candidate will demonstrate professional skills consistent with a) urban infrastructure and site engineering, b) the ability to work productively as both a leader and a team member, c) commitment to achieving the firm’s mission-driven and project specific objectives, and d) the ability to clearly communicate those objectives to their team and manage work-flow towards the firm’s goals.

Essential Functions:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Report to the Director of Innovation to support the fulfillment of both Client-based and internal project team goals
  • Responsible for budget planning, scheduling, client interaction, and operational functions related to the management, administration, and production of work
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to schedules and deadlines
  • Manage development of design tools and techniques that enhance the productivity of engineering team assignments company-wide
  • Support Innovation goals to develop and manage a team effectively while producing quantifiable results; manage a client portfolio and provide value to internal teams
  • Motivate staff to excel in day-to-day work environment and maintain a creative and positive spirit within the Innovation Team
  • Support each project and initiative with the ability to evaluate, forecast and advise the Director of Innovation regarding financial, scheduling, and budgetary standing
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing response to requests for proposal and contracts
  • Workplan, monitor, and report on project performance for multiple simultaneous projects
  • Review and identify current and potential discrepancies with budgets and contracts and cost over runs (i.e., timelines, schedules, staffing)
  • Monitor project billing and accounts receivable which includes direct communication with accounting department and other project management related operational activity
  • Reinforce the company’s core mission, standards, and expectations through mentoring, communication and management of staff
  • Assess performance of staff members and participate in performance reviews
  • Learn and utilize company tools for management of projects and information
  • Work closely with other project managers to efficiently utilize staff and company resources
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive company information

Job Qualifications:

  • Ability to conceive, propose and defend potential solutions in a real time working environment
  • A clear understanding of engineering designs of tasks and assignments, including problem analysis, concept, formulation, design iteration, integration, and review
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills for working within a design team in a management role
  • Effectively able to work well with others at all levels of the company; both onsite and remotely
  • Must have strong and versatile computer drawing and design skills, and demonstrated presentation and communication skills (verbal, graphic, and written)
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, multi-task and use time effectively
  • Work independently under general supervision, use initiative and good business judgment
  • Ability to read and interpret written information including business documents, contracts, forms, email correspondence and follow instructions
  • Ability to prepare analysis, reports, correspondence and memos
  • Ability to work in, and bring clarity to, ambiguous scenarios
  • Ability to determine and match appropriate level of work effort with the assignment at hand
  • A passion for ongoing learning and exploration
  • Must be dedicated to environmental sustainability goals as a high priority
  • Should be well versed in currents technologies, planning and design concepts, and industry thinking related to infrastructure, urban design and site engineering

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program (willing to consider degree in Architecture or Urban Design) and 6 years minimum experience
  • Demonstrable track record of Project Management success
  • Master’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering Degree (preferred)
  • Licensure preferred but not required (Engineer, Architect, Landscape Architect, Planner)
  • Working knowledge of Windows, MS Office, AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite, Google Suite
  • Proficiency with Project Management tools and processes, and ability to quickly integrate company management software (Deltek Ajera)
  • GIS, InDesign, Revitt, and/or other enhanced design tools experience preferred
  • No foreign language skills are required; multi-cultural and/or international experience is a strong plus
